Brett Yormark calls out Pete Bevacqua over CFP, Jim Phillips criticisms: ‘His behavior has been egregious’

Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua has been quite outspoken against the ACC in recent days. This stems from Bevacqua feeling as if the conference strongly campaigned against the Irish in the College Football Playoff conversation in an attempt to get Miami in the 12-team field. Turns out, other commissioners are not too thrilled with the move.
Brett Yormark of the Big 12 called out Bevacqua on Tuesday for his actions. Yormark believes the Notre Dame AD is “totally out of bounds” for going after the ACC and commissioner Jim Phillips.
“I think his behavior has been egregious,” Yormark said via SBJ on X. “He is totally out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the room, I’d tell him the same thing. You have to accept it. We all sign up for it.”
Some disappointment came from Yormark on Selection Sunday as well. The Big 12 only got one team in, the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Folks in Provo, UT, were making a big push to get the BYU Cougars in as well. Yormark getting multiple bids was a goal coming into the season, falling just a bit short.
Even so, he expressed satisfaction with the decisions the College Football Playoff committee made. Obviously, seeing BYU get included would have been a major plus but Yormark understands why Alabama and Miami were chosen as the last two at-large teams.
“Was I happy about BYU, no,” Yormark said. “… But I think overall they did the right job. Listen, it’s progress over perfection.”
At the time of posting, there is no known communication between Bevacqua and Yormark. Bevacqua revealed he did hear from SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, with the two discussing the CFP format.
Pete Bevacqua questions why ACC went after Notre Dame
Bevacqua’s original comments came on Monday when appearing on The Dan Patrick Show. However, a similar sentiment came on Tuesday when speaking at a press conference. He questioned why the ACC decided to go after Notre Dame.
“I would tell you, again, we have the ultimate respect for our fellow universities in the ACC,” Pete Bevacqua said. “Wonderful universities with wonderful athletic programs. So, it’s not about the universities. It’s not about Miami. I’ve texted back and forth with Dan Radakovich. I sent him a text last night, saying, ‘I’m so happy you guys made it. I hope you go deep. I think you have the talent to win it all.’ But, what we were really surprised by, disappointed by, was how the ACC Conference really went on a social media campaign, in my opinion, attacking our football program.”
