Royal Bolton Hospital doctors set to go on strike this week

The industrial action, taking place from 7am on Friday, November 14, until Wednesday, November 19, will impact NHS services across England, including those at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.
The British Medical Association (BMA) announced the strike after talks with the government broke down, marking the 13th round of industrial action since the dispute began in March 2023.
Dr Francis Andrews, medical director and consultant in emergency medicine at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our top priority is to keep patients safe and our well-tested plans ensure we’re able to continue delivering essential services during strikes.
“Our Emergency Department remains open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and it’s important people do not put off coming forward for urgent care in life or limb-threatening emergencies as our staff are here to help you.
“We’re asking people in Bolton to help us during this challenging period by using 111.nhs.uk or the NHS App for advice about your condition and where the right place is for the care you need.
“You can also book an appointment with your GP or visit one of your local pharmacies, who are able to help with a range of common conditions such as earache, sore throat, and urinary tract infections.”
Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said it has “robust plans” to minimise disruption for patients during and after the strike.
Patients with scheduled appointments on strike days will be contacted if their appointments need to be rescheduled.
If they have not been contacted, they should attend as planned.

Resident doctors, formerly known as junior doctors, make up nearly half of the medical workforce and include those from newly qualified to doctors with up to a decade of experience.
During the strike, they will walk out of both emergency and routine care, with senior doctors brought in to provide cover.
Previous strikes have resulted in thousands of postponed operations and appointments.
Dr Jack Fletcher, chair of the BMA’s resident doctors committee, said: “This is not where we wanted to be.
“We talked with the government in good faith.
“We hoped the government would see that our asks are not just reasonable, but are in the best interests of the public and our patients and would also help stop our doctors leaving the NHS.
“While we want to get a deal done, the government seemingly does not, leaving us with little option but to call for strike action.”
Health Secretary Wes Streeting described the strike as “preposterous”.
He said: “The BMA are walking away from an offer to improve resident doctors’ working conditions and create more specialty training roles to progress their careers.
“The BMA are blocking a better deal for doctors.
“These unreasonable and unnecessary strikes do not have the public’s support.
“The BMA’s reckless posturing will harm patients, leave other doctors and NHS staff to pick up the pieces and divert resources away from rebuilding the NHS.”
The BMA claims that, despite recent pay rises, resident doctors’ pay is still around 20 per cent lower in real terms than in 2008.
The union has also raised concerns about the shortage of specialty training jobs after the second year of training, with more than 30,000 applicants for 10,000 positions this year.
The NHS Confederation’s Rory Deighton said he was “bitterly disappointed” by the collapse of talks and urged the BMA to get back to the negotiating table.
He said: “It is patients who bear the brunt of industrial action, with more cancelled appointments, tests and operations leaving people waiting longer for the care they need.”
