A Toronto homeowner has been charged after allegedly opening fire as a group of suspected thieves tried to steal a vehicle from his driveway, while the would-be thieves escaped without being arrested.
Toronto police were called to the Kingston Road and McCowan Road area in Scarborough shortly after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday for a suspicious incident.
Police allege multiple suspects were attempting to steal a vehicle parked in the driveway when the 37-year-old resident fired a gun.
The suspects abandoned the attempted theft and fled before officers arrived. Police said they did not manage to steal the vehicle.
No injuries were reported, but investigators said gunfire damaged a neighbouring home.
Police subsequently charged the unnamed homeowner with recklessly discharging a firearm. He was scheduled to appear in bail court Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, police said the suspects who allegedly tried to steal his vehicle remain outstanding, and the investigation is continuing.
