Razer Basilisk V4 Pro Review
When I reviewed the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro back in 2022, I called it one of the best gaming mice on the market. I also gave it one of the highest scores I have ever given a gaming mouse. Four years later, Razer has returned with the Basilisk V4 Pro, and while it doesn’t completely reinvent the formula, it does something a little more important. It makes an already excellent mouse feel even better.
The Basilisk V4 Pro is quite simply one of the best-feeling gaming mice I have ever used. It just feels so block good. For something you can spend several hours holding every single day, comfort and feel matter a ton. Granted, the specs are also important. I mean, a 50K sensor and 8K polling rate is impressive. But if a mouse doesn’t feel good in your hand, none of that matters.
Familiar Shape That Works
If you’ve used a Basilisk before, the V4 Pro will immediately feel familiar. Maybe a little too familiar. It might be its biggest knock, but it’s also what makes the mouse so special.
For me, its ergonomic shape is perfect. It’s a meaty mouse designed for right-handed users, and the thumb rest gives your hand a natural place to settle. My hand simply falls into position when I pick it up.
I’ve used plenty of gaming mice over the years. Some feel great for a few minutes before becoming uncomfortable and others are incredibly light and never feel substantial. The Basilisk V4 Pro hits that sweet spot for me. It has enough weight to feel solid without feeling too blockbersome.
Razer has also managed to cut roughly 10 percent from the weight, bringing the V4 Pro down to around 100 grams. Granted, that might be too big for some. It’s a heavy mouse compared to the featherweight mice often used by competitive FPS players. That said, the Basilisk isn’t trying to compete in that category. It’s designed around comfort, control, and versatility.
Everything Feels Right
The buttons have a satisfying and responsive feel. The scroll wheel is excellent, and the mouse glides effortlessly across my desk.
The HyperScroll Tilt Wheel is easily one of my favourite features. You can switch between tactile and free-spin scrolling, while Smart-Reel can automatically change modes depending on what you’re doing.
It’s great for gaming, but I also love it for everyday use. Flying through a m***ive webpage or doblockent in free-spin mode is something you don’t appreciate until you’ve gone back to a standard scroll wheel.
The V4 Pro also gives you 14 customizable controls, including the new M1 button. Through Razer Synapse, practically everything can be configured, from simple button ***ignments to macros. Razer’s Smart Profiles are useful as well because Synapse can automatically switch your configuration depending on the game or application you’re using.
There is a lot to unpack here, but thankfully, the Basilisk never feels like a complicated mouse. You can customize practically everything if you want to, or you can plug it in, pick it up and start gaming. Even in its default setting, the mouse is butter-smooth and functional.
Superb Performance
Under the hood is Razer’s Focus Pro 50K Optical Sensor Gen-3, with support for polling rates up to 8,000 Hz. It’s fast, accurate and incredibly responsive. Tracking is excellent. Bottom line, I never experienced any issues with consistency or wireless performance. Does that 8K polling magically make me a better gamer? Oh hell no. But when you’re paying top dollar for a mouse, it’s re***uring to know you’re getting some of the best hardware Razer has to offer.
The wireless connectivity is also excellent. The V4 Pro supports Razer HyperSpeed Wireless Gen 2, Bluetooth 6.2 and USB-C, while HyperSpeed Multi-Device Support lets you use a single dongle with compatible Razer peripherals.
More importantly, the wireless connection simply works. I never found myself thinking about it, which is exactly how wireless should be.
Battery Life Is Excellent
Razer rates the Basilisk V4 Pro for up to 200 hours of battery life, which is amazing. Over the review period, I never found myself needing to charge it. Razer’s Mouse Dock Pro V2 also provides magnetic wireless charging, RGB lighting, and a charge indicator. Unfortunately, the dock is not included and is sold separately, which is a bit of a bummer. The Dock is a must and fantastic, but should be included with the core mouse. It’s a tough pill to swallow when the mouse itself costs $169.99 USD.
RGB Still Looks Damn Good
I’m a sucker for that RGB lighting. The Basilisk V4 Pro features seven-zone lighting with a full underglow, and unlike some peripherals, you can actually see the lighting while you’re using the mouse. Does RGB make me a better gamer? Oh hell no! Does it look fantastic sitting on my desk? Absolutely!
Overall, it’s a fantastic mouse and I am having a hard time finding any flaws. Maybe the biggest problem with the Basilisk V4 Pro is the same problem that has followed the Basilisk line for years: it’s pricey. At $169.99 USD, there are plenty of excellent gaming mice available for considerably less.
But I get it. The Basilisk V4 Pro isn’t trying to be the cheapest option, the lightest option or even necessarily the mouse for *** competitive FPS players. It’s trying to be the mouse that does everything. And it does that exceptionally well.
At the end of the day, the Basilisk V4 Pro isn’t a radical reinvention of the Basilisk V3 Pro. Instead, Razer has taken an already excellent design and refined it in practically every meaningful way. It’s a bit lighter. It’s a bit faster. It’s more customizable. The battery life is excellent. The wireless connectivity is rock solid. The HyperScroll wheel remains one of the best I’ve used. But above all else, this mouse feels incredible. At $169.99 USD, it’s certainly not cheap, and I still wish Razer included the charging dock. But if you’re willing to pay the premium, you’re getting one of the most comfortable, capable and feature-packed gaming mice available.
