In Hollywood, it qualifies as a “possible maybe” with an asterisk — perhaps two.
Representatives for Meghan, the Duchess of Sus***, in the show business capital have had exploratory talks about her joining a third season of “The Gentlemen,” Guy Ritchie’s Netflix crime series, according to two people briefed on the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because no deal had been consummated.
One important caveat: Netflix has not yet ordered a third season of “The Gentlemen.”
Netflix declined to comment, as did Toff Guy Films, one of the production companies behind the series. The publicity firm Sunshine Sachs, which represents Meghan, declined to comment.
The discussions, however preliminary, represent another step toward an acting comeback for Meghan, 45, who left the drama “Suits” in 2017 as her relationship with Prince Harry became increasingly serious. She recently returned to acting with a cameo in the forthcoming Amazon MGM movie “Close Personal Friends.”
It was her first role in more than seven years and will debut on their service next year. Meghan’s enormous celebrity greatly complicates her casting, production executives have said: It’s difficult for audiences to see a character rather than the Duchess of Sus***.
“The Gentlemen” could offer a considerably splashier return, depending on the size of the role. The series, created by Ritchie and based on his 2019 movie of the same name, follows an English aristocrat who discovers that his family estate houses a sprawling marijuana operation.
The first season was a breakout hit for Netflix, spending three weeks as the streaming service’s most-watched English-language television series worldwide. The second season, starring Theo James, debuts on Sept. 3.
The series films in Britain. The potential job may offer a clue behind the abrupt decision revealed this week by Harry and Meghan to move their family back to the country after six years in exile in the United States during a royal rift with Harry’s family.
The news of Harry and Meghan’s return set off a media feeding frenzy. They couple and their many dramas have polarized the public but still command intense interest. The possibility of Meghan having an acting job was earlier reported by News.com.au, an Australian news organization, and separately in a Substack post by Tina Brown, the former editor in chief of Tatler, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.
So, to recap: Meghan is in early talks for an unidentified role in a season of television that does not yet exist.
Hollywood has greenlit projects on less.
