The Steelers’ lopsided loss to the Bills in Week 13 made for a week of questions about head coach Mike Tomlin’s future and quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ ability to play through a fractured left wrist, but their trip to Baltimore in Week 14 ended with on a much more positive note.
Edge rusher Alex Highsmith sacked Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson on the final play of the game to seal a 27-22 win that pushed the Steelers back into first place in the AFC North. Rodgers said after the game that he hoped it would stop the chatter about Tomlin and the quarterback’s performance also provided an effective response to questions about his fitness.
Rodgers broke a long streak without a completion traveling more than 20 yards in the air when he hit wide receiver DK Metcalf with a 52-yard p*** on the team’s first offensive play and they had two other long completions during the game. Rodgers also connected with wideout Calvin Austin for a 31-yard gain and saw running back Jaylen Warren turn a short p*** into a 39-yard score on day that ended with him going 23-of-34 for a season-high 284 yards.
“We knew what was on the line today and that’s why you go do business with a guy like Aaron,” Tomlin said in his postgame press conference. “For thick days like today. He’s a been-there done-that guy. Beyond the experience component of it, he relishes it. You can just tell. That’s the benefit of having a guy like AR.”
The Steelers have work to do to remain in playoff position over the final four weeks of the season and Tomlin’s comments suggest they’ll be leaning heavily on Rodgers to guide their way through those games.
