COLUMBUS JUNCTION, Iowa (WJW) — Authorities in Iowa said 88 children were taken into protective custody following a large-scale investigation at a church camp.
According to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, the operation took place between June 12 and June 13 at two addresses in Columbus Junction and Fredonia. The towns are roughly an hour south of Cedar Rapids and about 2 miles away from each other.
The children were attending programs hosted by the Kingdom Ministry of Rehabilitation and Recreation at the organization’s Shekinah Glory Camp and at another location, authorities said. Per the church’s website, the camp was scheduled for June 8-29.
Officials executed search warrants at two properties after receiving reports of possible child abuse. During the operation, all 88 children were placed into protective custody, according to the sheriff’s office.
The minors were temporarily housed at a Methodist church in Wapello, about 15 miles southeast of Columbus Junction and Fredonia, where they met with child protection workers. KCCI reported that all children have since been reunited with their families.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no specific charges have been announced. State child protective services and criminal investigators are blockisting, in addition to the Columbus Junction Police Department.
Per its website, Kingdom Ministry says its mission is “blockisting individuals in breaking free from addiction through God’s Word, offering food and shelter to those in need, and supporting individuals during fasting and prayer.”
