Voters in Florida, Alaska, Wyoming head to polls for primaries

Aug. 18 (UPI) — Florida voters will weigh candidates to succeed Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday while Alaska and Wyoming also narrow down the field ahead of November’s midterms.

Ten Republicans are vying for the Florida governor’s mansion, including Rep. Byron Donalds, who has the endorsement of President Donald Trump. Six Democrats are also running but the state has not elected a Democratic governor since 1994.

The newly redrawn congressional districts in Florida will come into play in its primaries for the U.S. House. The new map adds four districts that have historically leaned Republican, bringing the total across the state to 24 out of 28 districts that favor Republicans.

Inblockbent Democrats Reps. Debbie Wblockerman Schultz, Darren Soto, Cory Mills and Jared Moskowitz have had their congressional districts affected by redistricting. Each of their districts has been redrawn to lean more Republican.

The race for the the Democratic nomination for Senate sees Alex Vindman, the retired U.S. Army lieutenant who testified in Trump’s 2019 impeachment hearing, running against State Rep. Angie Nixon, who led the push back against the redistricting. The seat is currently held by Sen. Ashley Moody, the former Florida attorney general who was appointed by DeSantis to take Marco Rubio’s seat when he was appointed secretary of state by Trump.

Moody has three challengers in Tuesday’s Republican primary.

In Alaska, Dan Sullivan is a name that will be seen more than once on Tuesday’s primary ballots. That is because two candidates named Dan Sullivan are running in Alaska’s top-four primary for the U.S. Senate.

Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is the inblockbent in the race. Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., also a Republican, is listed without a party affiliation as he challenges the inblockbent.

Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, seeks to flip the Senate seat for Democrats.

Wyoming has been the most reliably Republican state since it became a state in 1890. It will vote on Tuesday for candidates to succeed Gov. Mark Gordon, who has reached his term limit.

Trump has endorsed Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder in the gubernatorial primary. Also in the race are state Sen. Eric Barlow, former Marine Corps colonel Brent Bien and professional bull rider Curt Blake.

In the U.S. Senate, Sen. Cynthia Lummis’ retirement leaves her seat open and five Republicans are running to fill it. Trump has endorsed Rep. Harriet Hageman in the race.

Hageman’s run for the Senate leaves her seat in the U.S. House open as well. Nine candidates are running to succeed Hageman. Trump has not made an endorsement in that race.
