From Italy’s beaches to Austrian lakes, summer holidays remain a priority for Austrians in 2025 – even as costs climb and budgets tighten.
Despite rising costs, people in Austria are not giving up their summer holidays in 2025. A new survey by ÖAMTC shows that 96 percent of people plan to travel this year, although many say they’ll need to watch their budget more closely than before.
Whether relaxing on a beach in Italy, heading to a lake in Carinthia, or taking the train to a nearby city, holiday plans remain a top priority across Austria.
High interest, but tighter wallets
Even with inflation and higher travel prices, the desire to take a break remains strong. According to the ÖAMTC survey of 1,000 people aged 18 to 69, nearly all respondents plan at least one holiday this summer. Around 70 percent want to travel abroad, while half also plan a holiday within Austria. Only four percent said they’re not planning a trip or are still undecided.

But that doesn’t mean affordability isn’t a concern.
Sixty percent of respondents said they’ll need to cut back on spending, with one in five saying they’ll need to make significant savings. The most common ways to save include choosing cheaper accommodation, cutting back on meals and activities, or shortening the length of the trip.
The average holiday budget this year is €1,233 per person — €171 more than last year. But due to inflation, travellers are unlikely to get more for their money. Solo travellers and retirees spend more than average, while families with children are budgeting about €120 less per person.

It’s still all about the sea
If there’s one clear summer trend, it’s this: Austrians love the beach. Nearly six in ten people plan a seaside holiday this year, and the top destinations are familiar favourites.
Italy and Croatia are once again leading the list of summer hotspots, with Greece in third place. Germany and Spain round out the top five. Sun, rest and time near water remain the top priorities.
Still, local travel also remains popular.

Around half of the respondents plan to take at least one holiday within Austria. Carinthia, Styria and Lower Austria are especially popular for staycations.
Cars remain the top choice, but trains are gaining
When it comes to getting to their destination, people in Austria continue to rely on private cars.
Seventy-one percent plan to use their own vehicle for at least part of their trip — although only 37 percent will rely on it exclusively. Depending on the destination, many combine driving with flying (21 percent) or train travel (13 percent).
Families in particular prefer private cars, with 75 percent saying it’s their top choice. But for travellers under 40, rental vehicles are gaining popularity.

Solo travellers are more likely to take public transport.

Around one third of solo holidaymakers will use the train, and just over a quarter will travel by long-distance bus. The survey suggests that travel preferences are closely tied to who you’re going with, and how much flexibility you want once you arrive.
