Drivers in Vienna have until the end of June to use up old short-term parking tickets (Parkscheine) purchased before 2025. After that, they will no longer be accepted.
From July 1st, only parking tickets that reflect Vienna’s current tariff of €1.30 per half hour will be valid for use across the capital. The City of Vienna raised parking rates in January 2025, but allowed older tickets purchased at the previous price of €1.25 to remain valid during a six-month transition period.
That grace period now ends on June 30th. From July onwards, anyone using the wrong ticket risks a fine of at least €36.
The ÖAMTC, Austria’s motorists’ club, has reminded drivers to check their ticket stock and dispose of outdated vouchers. It is also urging parking enforcement officers to show restraint during the first weeks of the changeover.

“The difference in tariff for half an hour’s parking is just five cents,” said Matthias Nagler, a traffic expert at the ÖAMTC. “It would be desirable if the parking enforcement officers could issue warnings – at least in the first few weeks – instead of immediately imposing fines.”
No refunds or exchanges for old tickets
While the price hike was announced well in advance, the City of Vienna has refused to offer a refund, exchange, or top-up option for unused tickets bought before 2025. That means many residents may be left with a pile of now-worthless paper.
“Unfortunately, the City of Vienna is still refusing to exchange or return old parking tickets,” Nagler said. “Anyone who still has them after the deadline will be stuck with them.”
Nagler called on Vienna’s new leaders to create a simple system allowing drivers to pay the small difference to upgrade old tickets. “Nobody would have a problem with paying a few cents on top of the current tariff,” he said. “But the complete loss of value is a financial disadvantage for consumers and is incomprehensible.”

What this means for drivers
Short-term parking zones in Vienna – known as Kurzparkzonen – cover all districts, with different rules depending on location and time of day. Visitors or those without a resident parking permit must display a valid ticket, available in paper form or digitally via mobile apps.
The new tariff of €1.30 per half hour has applied since January 1st, 2025. While many residents have already made the switch to the updated tickets or digital versions, some may still have old paper vouchers stored in cars or at home.
From July 1st, using an invalid ticket will be treated the same as parking without a ticket at all – and subject to the standard fine.
