The Best Social Media Posts

It was like the Twitter of old on Thursday, as users on the site now known as X revelled at the jaw-dropping and very public “big, beautiful breakup” between Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

The entirely predictable split between Trump and Musk finally came to pass as long festering resentment spilled out into all-out social media fighting. The very catty barbs escalated so much that Musk alleged that Trump’s name was in the Epstein Files, and the president fired back that the U.S. government make take away the billions in federal subsidies it gives to Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX.

The unbecoming and unedifying spectacle of the world’s most powerful man and the world’s richest man throwing insults and horrific allegations at each other, predictably, was met by concern and embarrassment for both Trump and Musk supporters, confused as they were by a feud between their two MAGA heroes. One of the most bizarre and funniest responses to the breakup, and one which was latched onto by every late night TV host, came from Kanye West. The disgraced rapper simply tweeted, “Broooos please noooooo 🫂 We love you both so much.”

On Thursday, there was an incredible amount of right-wing cope, which led to dozens upon dozens of unintentionally hilarious tweets from many Twitter/X main characters. Billionaire Bill Ackman, infamous for his meandering, verbose and very lengthy tweets, simply and very earnestly tweeted, “I support @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk and they should make peace for the benefit of our great country. We are much stronger together than apart.”

That gloomy feeling was neatly summed up by InfoWars founder Alex Jones, who tweeted, “God help us all.”

Some of the MAGA reaction veered into strange psychosexual areas, too. Far-right gadfly Jack Posobiec tweeted in all seriousness, “Some of y’all cant handle 2 high agency males going at it and it really shows. This is direct communication (phallocentric) vs indirect communication (gynocentric). I understand you aren’t used to it.” Another MAGA diehard, Joey Mannarino, tweeted, “Trump and Elon aren’t attacking one another in a way that won’t be fixed. People forget how men with testicles spar. You’re watching two people with balls the size of the moon debate an issue. This is what masculinity looks like.”

Just to encapsulate how bizarre America in 2025 has become, one of Musk’s many baby mamas, Ashley St. Clair, a woman he is currently in a legal dispute with, tweeted at Trump, “hey @realDonaldTrump lmk if u need any breakup advice.”

On the other side, both Trump and Musk haters were overcome with joy, and the resultant tweets harkened back to the pre-X golden era of Twitter. There were memes galore, as people went above and beyond with their posting. Even elected Democrats joined in, and for once didn’t fully kill the fun. In an interview outside Congress, Democratic Party star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was asked about the spat, and replied, “Oh man, the girls are fighting, aren’t they?”

On a rather glorious day for terminally online people, The Hollywood Reporter has gathered together some of the best tweets that captured the mood of a nation. You’re welcome.
