TAIPEI — Taiwan’s former President Tsai Ing-wen is set to pay her first visit to Britain since leaving office, according to sources directly involved, in an unofficial but symbolic trip that demonstrates the two sides’ warming relationship amid growing pressure from China and Russia.
Tsai, who obtained a Ph.D. in law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, is scheduled to fly to London from Copenhagen on Thursday. She is expected to give talks at several academic institutions in England, pay a visit to the Houses of Parliament, and hold meetings with lawmakers across the political spectrum, according to two sources involved in the planning. Tsai no longer holds any public office, and thus her visit is private in nature.
