Suniel Narang’s Clarification on IMAX Controversy

In recent days, Hyderabad’s movie lovers were thrilled by reports that the city would finally get a new 70-ft IMAX screen.

The buzz began when Asian Group’s Suniel Narang confirmed plans for an IMAX multiplex in Hakimpet — a development that reignited hope among cinephiles who’ve long awaited the return of IMAX to the Telugu states.

But the excitement was short-lived.

In an unexpected twist, Preetham Daniel, Vice President of IMAX Corporation, issued a public clarification. While he acknowledged ongoing discussions with several groups, he firmly stated that no agreement had been finalized with Asian Cinemas. The statement left fans confused, and for many, deeply disappointed.

Following the backlash, Suniel Narang stepped in to clarify. Yes, there are plans. But they’re still at a very early stage. Talks may begin soon, but nothing is officially in motion. The process will take time, and as of now, the project hasn’t been greenlit.

What stings most for cinema lovers is the fading hope of a dedicated, European-style cinema complex — not just another mall with a screen, but a true celebration of film.

Many imagined something akin to PVR Priya in Delhi or Palazzo in Chennai, inspired by iconic theaters like Odeon Leicester Square in London or Pathé Tuschinski in Amsterdam.

For now, Hyderabad remains without a single IMAX screen — an ironic reality for a city that’s home to one of India’s most passionate film cultures.

The dream isn’t dead, but it’s delayed once again. The demand is clear. The audience is ready. Now, it’s just a question of who will rise to the occasion and finally bring world-class cinema back to Hyderabad.
