PetroReconcavo, a leading independent oil producer in Brazil, has received authorization from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) to resume operations at the C***arongongo field in Bahia.
The company communicated this decision to the market on June 18, 2025, following a period of enforced shutdown due to safety concerns. Earlier this month, PetroReconcavo reported incidents involving containment failures at the C***arongongo field.
These failures affected systems designed to prevent leaks of oil and other fluids. After investigating, the ANP determined that the fire suppression system, as well as pipelines and pressure vessels, required repairs to restore operational integrity.
The agency then ordered a halt to activities at the Nova C***arongongo and Ilhas stations, both part of the C***arongongo field. PetroReconcavo responded by safely shutting down the affected installations and submitting a detailed plan and timeline for repairs to the ANP.
The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining high safety and environmental standards. After implementing the necessary improvements and meeting regulatory requirements, PetroReconcavo received the green light to restart operations.
The C***arongongo field produced an average of 768 barrels of oil equivalent per day in May 2025. This output represents about 3% of PetroReconcavo’s total production.
PetroReconcavo’s Operational Resilience in Mature Fields
The Bahia Asset, which includes C***arongongo, accounted for 13,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day in May 2025. Across all its operations, PetroReconcavo produced an average of 27,300 barrels of oil equivalent daily in February 2025.
PetroReconcavo has operated mature onshore oil fields in Brazil for over two decades. The company manages dozens of fields in the Recôncavo and Potiguar basins, focusing on efficient production and cost control.
Its ability to quickly address operational setbacks and comply with regulatory demands demonstrates agility and resilience. For the Brazilian oil sector, this event highlights the importance of strict regulatory oversight and robust safety practices.
Failures in containment or fire suppression systems can lead to environmental harm and operational disruptions. The swift response by both PetroReconcavo and the ANP limited the impact and restored operations with minimal delay.
From a business perspective, the episode underscores the challenges and opportunities of operating mature oil fields. PetroReconcavo’s experience and structure allow it to react quickly to technical or regulatory changes.
This supports continuous production and a stable local energy supply. The company’s approach provides a model for other independent operators managing aging ***ets in competitive markets.
