(NewsNation) — America’s most famous and outspoken libertarian says he’s in the fight for freedom in the age of President Donald Trump.
While the sitting president couldn’t be more different from John Stossel personally, philosophically, he’s adopted some of the ideas that the journalist has been championing for decades.
Stossel is an outspoken libertarian, a philosophy grounded in a deep skepticism of government power and the fallible, corruptible human beings who wield it — regardless of party. Conversely, libertarianism champions freedom in all its forms: freedom of individual choice, freedom of speech and free markets.
Stossel was a television fixture for decades, and now, he’s on his own, with a YouTube channel that is consistently churning out content.
Stossel notes that many people continue to believe the state is the solution to America’s woes, that we need more government, not less. He couldn’t disagree more.
DOGE
It should come as no surprise that Stossel has long championed political renegades who dare to cut government spending.
Despite Trump and former adviser Elon Musk’s recent falling out, Stossel believes the cost-cutting measures undertaken by the Department of Government Efficiency should continue.
“The Deep State is so ingrained that dramatic things had to be done,” said Stossel. “So, I think (Musk) has done what had to be done.”
Eventually, however, Stossel says the government will have to confront its biggest spending habits head-on.
“The DOGE cuts are trivial compared to all the freebies I get as an old person: Medicare, Social Security … that’s where most of the money is,” said Stossel.
The ‘Woke Mob’
Libertarianism isn’t just about spending and the economy; at its heart, it’s about individual freedom. That’s why Stossel has grown steadily more hostile to the ways of the so-called “woke mob.”
And for Stossel, one of his biggest adversaries in the woke mob is diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
He believes diversity is a strength in the U.S., but it shouldn’t be mandated by the government.
“When the government forces it, it’s one-size-fits-all,” he said. “And that always goes bad.”
Education
The cost, quality and culture of American education have been one of Stossel’s longest-running vexations.
The U.S. Department of Education’s public education budget has quintupled in recent years, yet test scores remain stagnant.
College tuition continues to skyrocket while the ratio of students to professors has dropped.
So, Stossel became an unabashed advocate for charter schools, vouchers and nearly anything that would break the state’s education monopoly.
Environment
Stossel has said the government is needed to protect the environment, at least from pollution, but what about climate change?
“Climate change is real. It’s not clear that it’s a crisis,” he said. “We can adjust to it. Years before Holland had modern equipment, they built dikes, and now you’ve got 100 million people around the world living below sea level.”
Cryptocurrency
“I think (cryptocurrency) is a good thing,” Stossel said. “I have pieces of paper in my pocket with dead presidents on them, and they’re worth a certain amount today. But when people my age keep living longer and the government wants to pay our Social Security, it prints so much more money that it’s going to be valueless. It’s good for people to have an alternative. And crypto was a smart alternative.”
Immigration
On immigration, Stossel breaks with some of Trump’s policies — and definitely the president’s rhetoric.
“We could let more people in legally, and we have in the past,” said Stossel. “I think it’s great that Trump stopped the illegal immigration and is deporting criminals. But he’s just full of crap. What he implies is that immigrants are committing most of the crimes. Undo***ented immigrants pay more into our economy than they get back.”
Tariffs
Stossel believes Trump’s blanket tariffs are “arbitrary.”
“For the most part, they’re just a tax on us. And few people understand how nothing is made in America — almost nothing,” he said. “Almost everything has parts from everywhere. And that division of labor is what makes our life so much better, because some people are just better at doing certain things.”
