New Las Vegas-area grocery store location popular among Hispanics amid federal crackdowns

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A grocery store popular among Hispanics opened its doors Wednesday in Las Vegas amid a federal immigration crackdown across the country.

The new Superior Grocers is located at 390 South Decatur Boulevard. It’s the California-based store’s 74th location and the second in the Las Vegas valley.

Nevada is the only other state with a Superior Grocers, which started in Los Angeles in 1981.

“We obviously focus highly on the Hispanic, but we also cater to whatever is in the community, so we do our homework,” Miguel Alarco, Vice President of Operations of Superior Grocers, said on Wednesday.

Superior Grocers opened amid a nationwide Immigration and Customs Enforcement crackdown that has led to the closure of the Broadacres Marketplace in North Las Vegas.

8 News Now asked Miguel Alarco of Superior Grocers if that was a concern.

“We’re not concerned personally from what I can see; it’s not impacting here as much as it is in California,” Alarco said. “But no, there’s no concern. I think because of the fact that we’re diverse, we should be able to offset some of that.”

Nearly one in five Nevadans are immigrants and more than half of the immigrants are naturalized citizens.

Elizabeth Mercha was shopping with her husband and 8 News Now asked her if she was concerned over ICE crackdowns.

“I am here legally, so it is something that does not concern me at all,” Mercha said in Spanish. “If you come illegally, try to quickly solve your problem of getting your papers in order to avoid these types of inconveniences.”

Joaquin Avila was another shopper, and 8 News Now asked him if he was worried about the ICE arrests.

“No, not much. Yes, there is some concern. But I don’t think they can come to this type of store, which is already a source of income for the family,” Avila said in Spanish.

Superior Grocers is planning to expand to other locations in Las Vegas, according to Miguel Alarco. The grocery store presented a check to several groups during Wednesday’s grand opening, with Red Rock Elementary School and Griffith Elementary School receiving funds.
