Minnesota National Guard deployed over cyberattack

(NewsNation) — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has issued an executive order effective immediately to activate the National Guard after the city of St. Paul became the target of a cyberattack.

On Friday, the city experienced a cyberattack that targeted critical systems and digital services. Walz said the cyberattack lasted through the weekend, causing significant disruptions and impairing St. Paul’s ability to provide vital services.

“The Minnesota National Guard’s cyber forces will collaborate with city, state, and federal officials to resolve the situation and mitigate lasting impacts,” Walz said. “Above all, we are committed to protecting the safety and security of the people of Saint Paul.”

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter III said during a news conference Tuesday that it was “a deliberate, coordinated digital attack carried out by a sophisticated external actor.”

The city told a local news outlet that IT systems were shut off Monday as a defensive measure to contain the threat and remain down as of Tuesday afternoon.

It is unclear who is behind the attack.
