Bolton commemorates Armistice Day with town hall service

The service was held in Victoria Square to commemorate the end of World War I and pay respect to those who have died and those currently serving.
Led by the Vicar of Bolton, Reverend Hannah Lane, she spoke on the steps of the town hall at 11am.
She said: “Once again this year, we will remember those who have served in the armed forces in years gone by with such distinction and sacrifice.
“We will think of our service personnel serving now, those currently committed overseas, and especially those who are on active service.

“The whole nation will be invited to remember the heroism and sacrifice of all who have fought and died in many different conflicts, as well as remembering those who served their country in other ways.
“So let us remember before God, and commend to his sure kingdom, those who have died for their country in war, those whom we knew, those whose memory we all treasure, and all who have lived and died in the service of others.”
Maroons were fired to mark the beginning and end of the two-minute silence to pause and reflect on the fallen and those continuing to serve.

The service was the third of Bolton Council’s Remembrance Weekend events – which began last Thursday with the Annual Remembrance Concert.
Over the weekend, Remembrance Sunday was marked with a service on the steps of the town hall and a two-minute silence.
Earlier this year, the 80th anniversary of VJ Day was commemorated with a poignant service at Bolton Parish Church.
