Suspected shoplifter arrested seconds after prison release

The arrest took place following her release from HMP Styal in Cheshire, as part of an investigation by Greater Manchester Police’s Bury Neighbourhood Team.
The woman, who had been serving time for separate offences, was identified as a suspect in a shoplifting case and taken into custody immediately upon her release.
PC Keiran Stodart from GMP’s Bury Neighbourhood Team said: “Our officers were aware of the suspect’s scheduled release, and took it upon themselves to secure the arrest at the earliest opportunity to fully investigate the reported theft.
“The woman was taken into custody, where she will be interviewed about the offence, and officers will be working for the most positive outcome.
“Retail crime remains a priority for our team, and we are always working with local businesses to identify offenders, share best practice, and create safer environments for shoppers and workers.”
The woman is suspected of travelling from the Salford area to Bury to steal various items from a shop.
She remains in custody for questioning.
The arrest comes amid national Safer Business Action (SaBA) Week, which is seeing forces across the country intensify and shine a spotlight on their work tackling retail crime.
Greater Manchester Police said it makes hundreds of arrests each month for shoplifting and theft offences.
GMP works with businesses to ensure the best crime prevention advice and material is provided.
The woman will be interviewed in connection with the alleged theft.
