Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life has flopped miserably at the box office, both in India and overseas. Despite a four-day extended weekend, the film could collect only about 40 crores gross in India. The overseas numbers are slightly better at 5 million dollars (around 41 crores), taking the worldwide total to just 81 crores.
The film opened on an extremely weak note and never picked up momentum over the weekend. Disastrous word-of-mouth and audience rejection sealed its fate early.

It is now unlikely to cross even the 50-crore mark in India and may end its global run below 95 crores.

Compared to the usual South Indian blockbusters, which often earn 80–100 crore on their opening day alone, Thug Life’s performance is shockingly poor.
It marks Kamal Haasan’s second box office washout after Indian 2. Some trade circles already consider Indian 3 a loss-making project in advance.
Ironically, this week also marks three years since Vikram, which had revived Kamal’s stardom as a box office star.
The producers of Thug Life may avoid losses due to strong non-theatrical deals. But the burden now shifts to distributors and theatre owners, many of whom are unlikely to recover their investments.
The film’s failure is especially damaging given its release during the peak summer season.
The exhibition sector had pinned high hopes on it to bring footfalls back to cinemas. Instead, it has delivered one of the most underwhelming performances in recent memory.
