(NewsNation) — Former President Joe Biden attended a Juneteenth celebration at a historic African Methodist Episcopal church in Galveston, Texas, calling it “a great honor to be here.”
He described Juneteenth as “a day of liberation,” representing “the long, hard night of slavery and the joyous morning that would come.”
Emphasizing that “Black history is American history,” Biden said the U.S. was founded on the promise of freedom for all.
He noted his past efforts to rename military bases tied to slavery and urged Americans to “keep pushing America forward.” He closed by highlighting the power of voting, saying, “Without voting in America, nothing is possible.”
In 2021, Biden signed legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday. The day marks the end of slavery by commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, which is considered the birthplace of the holiday.
The event was at the Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Thursday.
It is the first and oldest operating AME church in the state and is one of the locations where an order announcing the end of slavery in Texas was read.
