(NewsNation) — An Israeli military spokesman said Tuesday that forces have destroyed hundreds of Iranian missiles and aerial defense systems in what he described as a “very successful operation” aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani told NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports” that Israeli aircraft have maintained “aerial supremacy” from western Iran to Tehran for hours, destroying “dozens” of aerial defense systems and “hundreds” of missiles and launchers in the opening phase of operations.
“We’re fighting this war because we have to, because we can’t have this evil regime have weapons of mblock destruction,” Shoshani said. “Imagine those ballistic missiles attacking if they had nuclear weapons.”
The Israeli spokesman acknowledged that Iran, despite the damage, retains “significant capabilities to cause serious damage.” Shoshani noted Iran’s vast size compared to Israel and its years of military preparation.
“Iran is a country over 70 times the size of Israel; they are an enormous country, spending billions and billions every year creating weapons against Israel,” he said.
When asked about the operation’s ultimate goal, Shoshani said the primary mission is ensuring Iran does not develop nuclear weapons or significantly expand its missile capabilities.
“Our goal is very simple … to make sure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear bomb, to make sure that Iran doesn’t surprise us in a year or two down the line, with 10 times the ballistic missiles we’ve seen in recent days,” he said.
Shoshani warned Israeli civilians to follow Home Front Command guidelines, saying most casualties have occurred among people not in bomb shelters during attacks.
