Red Sox Receive Excellent News On Potential Superstar Target
If the Red Sox want to bring Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to Boston, it appears the storied franchise will at least have an opportunity to state their case to the superstar slugger.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Tuesday morning reported Guerrero and the Blue Jays did not reach an agreement on a contract extension by the Monday night deadline the sides established. According to Passan, the four-time All-Star “does not plan to negotiate” a potential extension in-season, which sets the stage for Guerrero to hit free agency after the 2025 campaign.
This development could bode well for the Red Sox, for whom the 25-year-old reportedly “would love” to play if he ultimately leaves Toronto. Boston, meanwhile, reportedly is a big fan of Guerrero’s game, and one top MLB insider last month indicated Craig Breslow and company would have a “good shot” at landing the power-hitting first baseman if he hit the open market.
How good of a shot? Well, another MLB insider last month thought the Red Sox were dragging their feet on adding Alex Bregman because the organization intended to make an aggressive pursuit of Guerrero. Bregman ultimately landed in Boston, but the star infielder’s three-year pact with the club shouldn’t prevent it from going after Guerrero this winter.
No, there currently isn’t a tailor-made fit for Guerrero with the Red Sox. But when you consider the kind of damage he could do at Fenway Park, it’s a move Boston absolutely should explore when the time comes.
