Coolie Overseas Rights Sold for 68 Cr: WAR 2 Effect Huge

Rajinikanth’s upcoming action entertainer Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is already generating m***ive buzz ahead of its August 14, 2025, release.

In a major update, the film’s overseas rights have been sold for a record 68 crore to Ayngaran International — one of the biggest players in Tamil film distribution.

As per Pink Villa, this marks the highest-ever overseas deal for a Rajinikanth film and the second biggest for any Tamil film to date.

Trade blockysts note that the number could have gone even higher if Coolie weren’t clashing with War 2, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. The box office face-off has impacted final negotiations in several territories.

Still, the 68-crore figure is nearly double the overseas value of Jailer, which sold for 35 crores. The sharp jump reflects the combined pull of Rajinikanth’s stardom and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s brand power.

Currently, Jana Nayagan leads the Tamil overseas pre-release charts with 75 crores (sold to Phars Films). It’s followed by Thug Life (63 crore), Leo (60 crore), and The Greatest of All Time (53 crore).

However, industry insiders believe that Coolie could face challenges due to the simultaneous release of War 2, which is being handled by YRF themselves in international territories.

While the Coolie producers are in a safe zone having recovered a huge chunk of production costs via distribution sales, it’s the overseas distributors who now carry the real risk.

The real test lies in whether the film can outperform in international markets despite direct competition from War 2.

That said, Rajinikanth’s loyal overseas fan base, coupled with Lokesh’s appeal among the youth, could still give Coolie the edge.

With two m***ive films clashing over the Independence Day weekend, August 2025 is shaping up to be one of Indian cinema’s biggest-ever global box office battles.
