Can Hyderabad IMAX Compete with Wadala IMAX?

Asian Group’s Suniel Narang has revealed that Hyderabad is set for a major cinema upgrade with a new IMAX screen near Hakimpet Air Base.

At around 70 feet wide, this will be India’s second-largest IMAX screen, just slightly smaller than Mumbai’s iconic Wadala IMAX, which measures 73 feet across.

Wadala IMAX is considered the gold standard in India. It was the country’s first commercial 15/70 film-based IMAX screen, originally built in 2001, and has since been upgraded with laser projection, advanced sound systems, and a redesigned auditorium featuring premium seating.

Its screen measures 72 by 42 feet, offering an immersive experience with crisp visuals and a 6-channel audio setup.

Hyderabad’s upcoming IMAX aims to match these high standards, targeting the 1.43:1 dual-laser format.

The project also includes five additional European-style screens, along with restaurants and retail spaces, making it a comprehensive entertainment hub.

The ground-level access design will enhance viewer convenience, similar to the layout of PVR Priya in Delhi.

While Wadala IMAX benefits from its long-standing reputation and proven technology, Hyderabad’s new IMAX promises modern infrastructure and a massive screen that could rival Mumbai’s finest.

If executed well, it could restore Hyderabad’s IMAX presence and offer a premium cinematic experience that competes directly with Wadala.

In summary, upon completion, Hyderabad’s IMAX has strong potential to compete with—and possibly challenge—Wadala IMAX, giving local cinema lovers a world-class experience close to home.
