Austria to raise KlimaTicket and driving licence costs in July and August

Higher fees for public transport and driving documents are coming soon in Austria—part of the government’s latest cost-saving reforms.

Summer travellers in Austria should prepare for higher costs, not just for holidays, but also for simply getting around. Several transport-related price increases are set to roll out in the coming weeks, as part of the government’s new savings package.

Higher fees start in July

Several transport-related administrative costs are also going up starting July 1st. The fee for issuing a new licence will climb to €178, up by €58.20. Meanwhile, applying for a new driving licence will cost €90 from July, marking an increase of €29.50.

These changes are part of a broader federal reform aimed at aligning administrative fees with inflation and generating additional budget revenue.

KlimaTicket price to rise in August

Austria’s popular KlimaTicket—a flat-rate pass for nationwide public transport—will also become more expensive. From August, the annual ticket will increase from €1,095 to €1,300. A further €100 hike is planned from 2026.

Other subsidies and exemptions are being scaled back as well. From this summer:

  • The VAT exemption for photovoltaic (PV) systems will be removed
  • The insurance tax exemption for electric vehicles will be scrapped
  • Free KlimaTickets for 18-year-olds will be discontinued

The new costs are part of the government’s 2025–26 budget consolidation plan. While the goal is to stabilise public finances, many of the cuts and increases are expected to impact regular residents, particularly those relying on public services and sustainable mobility incentives.

If you’re planning to apply for or renew any of these services, it may be worthwhile to do so before the higher fees take effect.
