All Eyes on Sekhar Kammula’s Kuberaa to Save Telugu Cinemas

Kuberaa is finally set to hit theaters this month, with a release date of June 20, 2025 — just 12 days away. Fans are eager to see Dhanush back on the big screen after the average performance of Raayan.

The film is already generating decent buzz despite its music not making a big impact. Its strong pre-release business has created excitement ahead of the box office battle.

Directed by Sekhar Kammula, Kuberaa boasts an exciting cast including Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh. This star-studded lineup appeals to both Tamil and Telugu audiences, making it a true pan-South Indian project.

The theatrical rights for Tamil Nadu have been sold for 20 crores, a solid figure given Dhanush’s popularity. However, the Telugu states have attracted even more attention, with pre-release business reportedly reaching 40 crores. This is driven by the combined star power of Nagarjuna, Rashmika, and Dhanush.

To meet high expectations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Kuberaa needs a strong box office start. The hefty price tag adds pressure for a solid opening.

With a budget of 120 crores, Kuberaa is Dhanush’s most expensive film to date. Initially, it faced competition from Hari Hara Veera Mallu, starring Pawan Kalyan, which was scheduled for June 12. However, since that film has been postponed, Kuberaa now enjoys a clear solo release window, increasing its chances of success.

Recent major releases have disappointed audiences, so all eyes are on Kuberaa to break that trend and potentially save theaters and producers.

The trailer is set to release soon and will set expectations for the film. Much depends on how well the trailer is received — a positive response could boost the film’s opening and help it earn big numbers, especially in the Telugu market during the crucial first weekend.

Dhanush’s popularity is undeniable. Earlier, in February 2023, he demonstrated this with SIR, which earned more in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana than in Tamil Nadu. His dubbed films have consistently performed well on television and in theaters in the Telugu states.

Most single-screen theaters are scheduled to reopen on June 20. It remains to be seen if Dhanush and Sekhar Kammula can deliver a hit.

Reports say Sekhar Kammula initially set the runtime at 3 hours and 15 minutes. The full version has been sent for censor certification, after which the team will work to trim it to around or below 3 hours.
