Hawaii Democrat Rep. Ed Case wins primary

Aug. 9 (UPI) — Hawaii Democrat Rep. Ed Case on Saturday beat back a primary challenge from his political left.

The 73-year-old centrist, who has represented the state’s 2nd Congressional District since 2019, was the projected winner over state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole, 42, and three other candidates for their party’s nomination.

“I feel very grateful that the voters want me to continue in office,” Case told Hawaii Public Radio on Saturday.

Keohokalole’s campaign called for a “new generation” of leadership, but Case argued that his experience and seniority is a plus. Keohokalole often called out Case for joining with Republicans on a vote the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would require voters to prove their citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Case has said more recently that he does not support the legislation.

Case will face GOP nominee Adriel Lam in November.
