Poilievre tells Carney to deliver the trade deal he promised

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to deliver the “good deal” he promised as Canada and the United States continue negotiations.

Poilievre said Carney promised during the election that he would be “elbows up,” negotiate a win and not accept a bad deal.

“Mr. Carney, keep your promise. Fight for Canada. Don’t take a bad deal,” Poilievre said. “We expect a good deal, like you promised.”

Poilievre said that before, Canada had no tariffs, and “we expect that he would at least match that.”

Poilievre also raised concerns about the possibility of one-sided tariffs that could leave Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber and automobile companies competing against tariff-free American businesses.

He warned that such an arrangement could lead to Canadian jobs moving south of the border and said, “We cannot accept the deindustrialization of our economy.”

The Conservative leader said his party has proposed using Canada’s natural resources through a strategic oil and minerals reserve as leverage. 

“We need to fight for the good deal Mr. Carney promised,” Poilievre said.
