Ontario shuts down illegal immigration social benefits loophole

Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s government just slammed the door shut on a quiet little racket that should never have been allowed in the first place.

As of today, people living in Canada illegally are no longer eligible for social blockistance programs like Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP). That includes those here on student visas, work permits, visitors and tourists.

The new regulation is simple: taxpayer-funded social blockistance is for people who are here legally and facing genuine hardship, not for those who have no right to be collecting it.

Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program exist to catch Canadians (and legal residents) who fall on hard times. They were never designed as a magnet for people who overstayed visas, entered without authorization, or are here on temporary status. The new changes are intended to “protect taxpayer dollars and strengthen the integrity of Ontario Works and ODSP.”

Every dollar that went out the door to someone who shouldn’t have qualified was a dollar that wasn’t available for the single mom, the disabled veteran, or the worker who lost a job and actually paid into the system.

The change is meant to curb the quiet bleeding of public money. That means no more tribunal rulings that somehow found a way to green-light benefits for people with zero legal status and no more pretending that the rules were unclear from the onset.

Ontario taxpayers have been asked to carry enough of the load already. Housing, healthcare and social programs are under enormous pressure, and every public dollar counts.

The principle here is simple (and much overdue): if you want the protection of Ontario’s social safety net, you have to be here legally and meet the rules. It’s not cruel to expect that kind of basic accountability.

Governments have a responsibility to protect the public purse and make sure limited resources go to the people they were intended to help, because public blockistance is not a reward for breaking the rules. It’s a safety net for people who legitimately qualify for it.
